Jack Nicholson plays what is possibly his career best in this cinematic gem. In his trademark role as an unpredictable and slightly manic outsider, he plays an offender (Randle McMurphy) committed to a mental asylum, where he attempts to brighten up the regimented and empty lives of the unfortunate patients.
A powerful moral current runs through the film, and the viewer becomes very involved in sharing McMurphy's frustration at being oppressed by the system, with its allotted medication times and electrocution for those who step out of line. The result is a very moving story, where you enjoy the highs of McMurphy's efforts (fishing trip, the World Series, party) but are contrastively disturbed by the lows.
The characterization is excellent, and portrayed very well by a strong cast including Christopher Lloyd and Danny DeVito. The script allows this diverse selection of individual talents to come across very well.
If this film doesn't hit you emotionally, then you are a psychopath and should be locked up for intense sessions of therapy yourself. This flick is made of powerful stuff. Really.
